A Beautiful Afternoon of Art, Poetry and Connection at The Clockhouse

There are some sessions at The Clockhouse that don’t just fill an afternoon … they stay with you.

Recently the Wednesday Art Club, led by the wonderful Bushra Hussain, was one of those moments where creativity, memory and community all came together in the most touching way.

Bushra brought a gentle, thoughtful energy to the room, guiding our seniors through a rich blend of poetry readings, book extracts, and creative expression on canvas. The theme of nature, art and words opened up conversations, laughter and reflection, and the group embraced every part of it with open hearts.

The feedback afterwards was glowing.

Nimmi summed it up beautifully, saying “the session was so enjoyable and really engaging, with everyone enjoying the beautiful poetry readings.” Her smile said the rest.

Caroline shared how much she loved the collaborative spirit of the afternoon: “I really enjoyed how we all contributed to the session, especially when we were all giving words that rhymed with each other and forming our own poems.” It was a moment where creativity became connection, seniors building poems together, one rhyme at a time.

And then came a moment that touched everyone in the room.

Dave, a much‑loved Clockhouse member, quietly reflected that the pencil drawing he created was the first time he had used a pencil since his brother, a keen pencil artist, had sadly passed away. It was a simple sketch, but it carried years of emotion, memory and courage. A small act that meant something huge. The room held that moment with real tenderness, and it felt like the perfect tribute to both his brother and the safe, creative space Bushra had nurtured.

Sessions like this remind us why the Clockhouse matters. Why showing up, sharing stories, and creating together is so powerful. Bushra gave our seniors not just an art class, but an afternoon of meaning , and they responded with warmth, humour and heartfelt honesty.

With sessions every Wednesday from 1–3pm, our Art Club continues to welcome seniors of all abilities. And if Bushra’s recent visit is anything to go by, we can expect many more memories, friendships and masterpieces to be created, very soon.
