The Leys CDI Christmas meal is always a highlight of the year, but this one felt especially magical. Maybe it was the fact that 114 seniors, friends and partners of CDI arrived with the determination of a festive army, set on having fun and lighting the room up with laughter. Whatever it was, it reminded me, again, why the Leys community is so special.
The feast was, of course, a triumph. The ‘wonderful’ Marsha Jackson and Lesley Sackey somehow managed to produce a meal that could rival a Michelin kitchen. Supported by our trustees, volunteers and the brilliant MITIE team (Ian, Catriona, John and Mirko), who gave their “giving‑back” day to us with huge smiles and even bigger energy.
But even Marsha and Lesley had to concede the spotlight to the smallest guest in the room. Three‑month‑old Lennox Sackey made his grand CDI debut, carried in like a tiny VIP by Ella and Lesley. Within minutes he had numerous new fans, endless cuddles, and even Santa looking slightly threatened by the competition.
Speaking of Santa, he barely made it through the door before being swept into a full‑scale photoshoot by Valerie, Manuela and Caroline. I’m not sure he expected to be treated like a celebrity prop, but he handled it with admirable resilience.
Our “happy hour” music quiz took everyone on a journey from the Housemartins to Jessie J, with Celebrations handed out for correct answers (and occasionally for enthusiasm alone). The standout moment came when Dave from Oxford United in the Community heard “Rockin’ Robin” and instinctively shook his tail feather, revealing that he once wore the Swindon Town FC mascot suit. A confession that delighted everyone except, perhaps, the Oxford United loyalists. GREAT SPORT Dave.
The raffle, as always, delivered its usual mix of suspense, mystery and familiar lucky faces. Every prize was wrapped so beautifully that no one had a clue what they were winning and, YES, Lubna won a prize AGAIN.
At this point, I’m convinced she has a gift. If she ever plays the National Lottery, the rest of us may as well pack it in.
As the final major event of CDI’s 30th anniversary year, the day carried a deeper sense of gratitude. To every partner, organisation, supporter and friend who has stood with us, not just this year, but across decades, THANK YOU. Your belief in our young people, our seniors and our community has changed lives in ways that statistics can never fully capture.
To our trustees, staff, volunteers and of course Felix, who patiently endures my jokes, my ideas and my habit of turning “quick chats” into strategy meetings, THANK YOU for giving so much of yourselves, every single day.
And to our community members, young and old, who fill our sessions with energy, humour and heart, you are the reason CDI exists. Supporting you is not just our work, it’s our privilege.
